Cuando oigas la Palabra, di: “Dios ha hablado a mi alma”. Los hombres olvidan las verdades porque son propensos a aplicárselas a otros y no considerar que son para sí mismos.

Igual que hay una sabiduría necia, hay una ignorancia sabia: no curiosear el interior del arca, ni preguntar por las cosas no reveladas. Deseo saber todo lo que necesito y todo lo que puedo, pero dejo los secretos de Dios para él. Soy feliz con que Dios me haga de su corte, aunque no de su consejo.

The Scripture is the sun; the church is the clock, whose hands point us to and whose sound tells us the hours of the day. The sun we know to be sure, and regularly constant in his motion; the clock, as it may fall out, may go too fast or too slow. We are wont to look at, and listen to the clock, we know the time of the day; but, where we find the variation sensible, we believe the sun against the clock, not the clock against the sun.

La Escritura es el sol; la iglesia es el reloj, cuyas manecillas nos señalan y cuyo sonido nos dice, las horas del día. Sabemos que el sol es seguro, y regular en su movimiento, pero puede ocurrir que el reloj vaya demasiado rápido o demasiado lento. Y, aunque estamos acostumbrados a mirar y escuchar el reloj para saber la hora del día, si encontramos alguna desavenencia, creemos al sol antes que al reloj, y no al reloj antes que al sol.

Let the sun arise in the firmament, and there is no need of witnesses to prove and confirm unto a seeing man that it is day....It is all one, by what means, by what hand, whether of a child, or a church....the Scripture comes to us; come how it will, it hath its authority in itself....and hath its power of manifesting itself....from its own innate light.
